Understanding Sugar Processing and Certifications
One Sunday morning, I picked up this sachet of cane sugar at a coffee shop and noticed it was Halal-certified.
Having gone through Halal certification for our own products, it reminded me that the source and processing of sugar can matter, especially for those with vegan or Halal dietary considerations.
When choosing desserts, many people look beyond taste. They want to know where ingredients come from, how they are processed, and whether they fit their dietary choices.
One ingredient that is often overlooked is sugar.
Many people assume that because sugar comes from plants, it is automatically vegan and Halal-friendly. But this isn’t always the case.
Is Sugar Always Vegan?
Not necessarily.
Some refined cane sugar may be processed using bone char, a material made from animal bones and used for filtration and decolourisation.
Although bone char does not normally remain in the final sugar, its use during processing means some refined sugars may not be considered vegan-friendly.
Not all sugar is processed this way, so methods vary between manufacturers and regions.
Is Sugar Halal-Friendly?
For those following a halal diet, the source and processing of ingredients are important considerations.
A sugar product that uses animal-derived processing aids may require further verification to ensure it meets halal requirements. This is why halal certification provides greater confidence, as it confirms that the product has been assessed according to halal standards.
When in doubt, ask your baker. Many commercial stores may not provide such transparency or frontline staff may not be trained to answer such questions. Ask nonetheless, our F&B industry needs to raise the bar and be informed about how to serve our community well.
In our next article, we will share what sweetener we use at Sweet Secrets and why.
